Robert K. Reid and his cousin, John Y. Lind, were physicians from a family of South Carolina plantation owners. Robert K. Reid was appointed the first superintendent of the state mental hospital in Stockton, California. John Y. Lind was elected the first state assemblyman and state senator of Calaveras County, California.
